IAF to Showcase 100 Aircraft at Varanasi Air Show, 15–20 Lakh Spectators Expected

Date:

The Indian Air Force (IAF) will showcase 100 aircraft during its Wings Over Ganga air show in Varanasi on October 22, 24 and 25, 2026. Officials expect between 15 lakh and 20 lakh spectators to attend the event, organised to mark the IAF’s 94th anniversary.

The show will highlight the Air Force’s operational capabilities, aviation technology and aerial combat skills, with extensive arrangements planned for public safety and crowd management.

The aerial showcase is expected to feature 52 fighter jets and 15 transport aircraft, alongside other aircraft.

Expected participants include:

  • Rafale fighter jets
  • Sukhoi-30MKI
  • MiG-29
  • Mirage 2000
  • Jaguar
  • Indigenous light combat aircraft

The event is designed to demonstrate the capabilities of the Indian Air Force and give spectators an opportunity to witness military aviation displays.

Uttar Pradesh authorities have put extensive security measures in place to manage the anticipated turnout.

Varanasi Police Commissioner Mohit Agrawal said 79 temporary police stations had been established, with 11,900 police personnel deployed. The Provincial Armed Constabulary, NDRF, SDRF, bomb disposal teams and Anti-Terrorist Squad will also assist.

Officials have prepared four traffic plans featuring diversions, barricades and alternative routes. Separate parking and access arrangements will guide visitors arriving from within Varanasi and other districts.

The ghats have been divided into zones, with designated entry and exit routes. CCTV cameras, 25 watchtowers, metal detectors and public address systems will support crowd monitoring.

Private boat operations on the Ganga will be prohibited from 8 am to 5 pm during the air show. Unauthorised drone flights within five kilometres on both sides of the ghats will also be prohibited.

Authorities have planned dedicated medical facilities to respond to emergencies during the event.

Chief Medical Officer N. P. Singh said three green corridors would facilitate patient transport despite traffic restrictions.

The arrangements include:

  • Eight temporary hospitals
  • 100 ambulances, including two water ambulances
  • Emergency support at major facilities, including Sir Sunderlal Hospital and the BHU Trauma Centre
  • NDRF, SDRF, water police and local divers for rescue operations

Drinking water, toilets and other public amenities will also be provided at parking areas and crowded locations.
