Ashok Gehlot Questions Seriousness After Pachpadra Refinery Fire Incident

Date:

JAIPUR, RAJASTHAN — Congress leader and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has raised concerns over the handling of the Pachpadra refinery project following a reported fire incident ahead of its proposed inauguration.

Speaking in Jaipur, Gehlot questioned the preparedness and seriousness of authorities, especially in light of earlier announcements that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to inaugurate the refinery on April 21.

Gehlot said that if the refinery had still been under construction, a fire incident could have been understood as part of ongoing work, but added that the situation becomes more concerning when a project is close to inauguration. He suggested that such incidents raise questions about safety measures, planning, and oversight.

He pointed out that the government had already publicised the inauguration date and the Prime Minister’s visit, which indicates that the project was expected to be fully ready. In such a scenario, he said, any accident reflects a lack of seriousness in ensuring proper safety standards.

The Pachpadra refinery, being developed as a major industrial project in Rajasthan, is expected to play a key role in boosting the state’s economy, generating employment, and strengthening the energy sector. Given its importance, Gehlot stressed that all necessary precautions should have been taken to avoid such incidents.

He further implied that accountability is important in large-scale infrastructure projects, especially when they involve public resources and high-profile commitments. According to him, authorities must ensure that such projects meet safety and operational standards before announcing inauguration dates.

The incident has also triggered political reactions, with opposition leaders questioning the government’s handling of the project, while the ruling side is yet to provide a detailed response.

Observers note that industrial safety and project readiness are critical issues, particularly in large refinery projects where risks are higher. Any lapse can not only delay operations but also raise concerns about long-term reliability.

Ashok Gehlot’s remarks underline the need for strict safety checks and careful planning in major infrastructure projects, especially when they are nearing completion and public inauguration.
