JAIPUR, RAJASTHAN — Rajasthan Minister of State for Women and Child Development Manju Baghmar has described the Women’s Reservation initiative as a historic milestone in India’s development journey, emphasizing its role in strengthening women’s participation in governance and decision-making.
Speaking in Jaipur, Baghmar said that the country is moving through a transformative phase in the 21st century, often referred to as the ‘Amrit Kaal’, and that the push for women’s reservation marks a significant and progressive step during this period. She stated that the provision of 33 percent reservation for women—from Panchayati Raj institutions to Parliament—aims to give women a meaningful role in policymaking and leadership. According to her, this measure is not just about representation but about enabling women to actively shape policies that impact society at large.
Baghmar noted that women constitute nearly half of the country’s population, and their inclusion in political processes is essential for balanced and inclusive development. She further added that the initiative is expected to empower women not only politically but also socially and economically, as greater representation can lead to policies that better address issues related to education, health, safety, and livelihoods. The minister also highlighted that local governance institutions, such as Panchayats, have already demonstrated the positive impact of women’s participation, and expanding this model to state and national levels will further strengthen democratic institutions.
Her remarks come amid ongoing national discussions on the Women’s Reservation Bill, which has generated both support and criticism from different political parties. While the ruling establishment has presented it as a landmark reform, opposition leaders have raised concerns regarding its implementation framework.
Baghmar maintained that the focus should remain on the larger goal of empowering women and ensuring their rightful place in governance, rather than allowing political differences to delay progress.
